Arsenal already have their own Cristiano Ronaldo that ‘scares the life’ out of teams

Arsenal may have a scary prospect for Mikel Arteta in the ilk of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mikel Arteta has been told he has his own version of a young Cristiano Ronaldo.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been told that he already has a young Cristiano Ronaldo in his squad who has played a big part in the Gunners’ impressive start to the season in Gabriel Martinelli. The north London side sit top of the Premier League table, two points clear of Manchester City and are also top of their Europa League group.

Martinelli on the left flank of Arsenal’s front three has been in blistering form, with five goals in 12 league games as he has formed a frightening partnership with Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka as Arsenal’s front three. The Brazilian has come in for plenty of praise this season, and has also been compared to a young Ronaldo who burst onto the world stage 15 years ago.

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy highlighted Martinelli and Saka ahead of the Gunners’ trip to face Graham Potter’s side on Sunday, and remembered the Brazil international’s goal at Stamford Bridge in 2020 when he sprinted the length of the pitch to score.

“They’re the two [Martinelli and Saka] that make you tick,” Cundy told The Highbury Squad. “You take those two out, all of a sudden Arsenal become a very different side. The two players that scare the life out of me at the weekend are Martinelli and Saka, the way that they come inside.

“I remember the goal at Stamford Bridge when N’Golo Kante slipped where he’s ran the length of the pitch. Once he’s gone, the boy’s pace, but physically as well, and he’s still yet to grow into that.

“You can see he might have that kind of Ronaldo about him, that body shape. He’s an athlete in the true sense of the word.” Ronaldo’s athleticism grew dramatically during his formative years at Manchester United, and Arteta could have a gem in his ranks if Martinelli can go on and repeat some of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s achievements.

Jason Cundy compared Gabriel Martinelli to a young Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Brazilian is making an impression this season however, forcing fans to plead with him to sign a new contract at the Emirates.

The 21-year-old’s contract expires in 2024, though reports have claimed that talks have begun on a new deal for the star as clubs in both the Premier League and around Europe will have him on their transfer shortlists due to his impressive form this season.

Potter’s Chelsea are reportedly keen on Martinelli and could be waiting in the wings if Arsenal cannot agree terms on a new deal for the forward, while they are also yet to announce a new deal for Saka, who is also out of contract in 2024 despite optimism at the club that an extension will be signed.
