Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy names ‘ideal replacement’ for Jordan Henderson

Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy believes Declan Rice would shine as an attacking threat in the Reds’ midfield and would be an ideal replacement for Jordan Henderson.

Rice has long been linked with a move away from West Ham, with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City all linked with bids for the Hammers captain.

However, the 23-year-old, who already has 34 caps for England, has not pushed for a move away from east London and remains under contract with West Ham until 2024, with the club holding an option for a further year, so a huge asking price – thought to be around £100m – has put off potential suitors.

Murphy, though, feels Liverpool would do well to bring Rice to Anfield, believing that there is a lot more to come from Rice in an attacking sense, having largely been deployed as a defensive midfielder in his career so far.

He may have scored no more than two Premier League goals in a season so far, but Murphy reckons he could significantly increase that given the opportunity to play further forward and eventually take 32-year-old Henderson’s place in midfield.

‘I actually think in a better team he will end up playing further forward in midfield and get you 10 or 15 goals a season,’ Murphy told talkSPORT of Rice. ‘I actually think he will get double figure goals and assists. He’s got everything.

‘He has to play deeper here and with England because we don’t have anyone who can do that. West Ham don’t have anyone else who can spot danger like him.

‘When Steven Gerrard came on the scene at Liverpool, he was touted as a number four, a holding midfielder. He ended up being a number 10 and a central midfielder who won games

‘Could you imagine him [Rice] in Liverpool’s side? If he was playing ahead of Fabinho and alongside Thiago, and he took Henderson’s place at Liverpool. Imagine him in that role, he’d get you goals.’
