‘I want to win’: Mikel Arteta doesn’t want two Arsenal players in his starting line-up so often in 2023

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to ease the workload on Granit Xhaka and Bukayo Saka after the World Cup.

The Sun report that the Gunners boss wants two new faces in the January transfer window to keep the momentum going.

Saka and Xhaka have played some part in all 15 Arsenal games so far this season, with Arteta not making as many changes as he could do in the Europa League.

With qualification now assured, that may change in the forthcoming two matches, but Arteta wants a bigger squad to allow more squad rotation.

Arteta wants to rest Saka and Xhaka more

Arteta has chosen to keep playing his best players and keep the momentum going but there have been some signs of tiredness in the Arsenal ranks recently.

In some ways, it might be a case of getting through to the World Cup still top of the Premier League and ensuring progression in the EFL Cup on top of the Europa League.

Performances are not as important during a frantic period of the season, and the momentum generated if Arsenal can go into the World Cup on top of the table would be fantastic for Arteta.

Last week, Arteta said he wants Saka to demand to play every week: “Look at the top players in the world, they play 70 matches, every three days and make the difference and win the game.

“You want to be at the top, you have to be able to do that. And if we start to put something different in the mind of a young player, I think we are making a huge mistake because then [he would] be like ‘No, I don’t play now, on astroturf I don’t play’.

“I don’t want that. I want them to be ruthless every three days. I want them knocking on my door (saying) ‘I want to play, I want to win the game’.

“There is no fitness coach in the world that is going to tell me that they cannot do it, because I’ve seen it.

“72 games and scored 50 goals. The players that score 50 goals do not play 38 games in the season, it’s just impossible.”
